Coffee is how we say welcome.
A family tradition from the mountains of Yemen, roasted in small batches in Portland, Oregon.
A room in Sana'a“In Yemen, coffee is how you say welcome.”
Somara started with the coffee we grew up around: beans from the mountain terraces of Yemen, roasted at home and poured for every guest who walked through the door. The pot was always on, and no one left without a cup.
Yemen is where coffee was first grown as a crop and traded as a drink, shipped to the world through the port of Al-Makha. That's where the word mocha comes from. Today we source from smallholder farms in Yemen's highlands, roast in small batches in Portland, and bring that same welcome to your kitchen, your celebrations and our market table every Saturday.

Old Sana'a, YemenInspired by Old Sana'a.
Our bags and this site borrow from the tower houses of Sana'a: white gypsum trim, zigzag friezes and the qamariya, the arched stained-glass window that glows over Yemeni rooms at night.
